What To Do If Someone Impersonates You On Twitter

I guess you haven’t lived until someone impersonates you on twitter.

Shock, horror! You have a doppelganger on twitter! What to do?

While twitter allows parody accounts as harmless fun, when someone impersonates you and you risk both reputation and intellectual property, you need to act fast. Thankfully, Twitter Support gets on the case as soon as you report the fact.

Step 1: Go to the offender’s profile and click on the gear icon.

Step 2: Select from the list ‘They’re being abusive or harmful’.

Step 3: Select ‘Pretending to be me or someone else’.

Step 4: Provide as much information as possible including the twitter handle for the account impersonating you and the reasons for reporting it. Would you risk financial losses? Would your intellectual property be compromised? Be as specific as possible.

Step 5: Email response from Twitter Support requesting information from you. You need to submit proof of ID (passport/driving licence) and at least two websites that confirm your name and online profile/presence.

Step 6: Resolution.

I received Twitter Support’s reply solving my issue (removal of impersonating account) after about three hours from my initial email. I was very impressed with twitter’s prompt action.
