When you are stuck for ideas of where to go for a leisurely Friday lunch to celebrate the end of the week, Gaylord Restaurant on Mortimer Street is a good choice. Even with its shortcomings, I would go back.
The verdict
Here’s why:
- the food is cooked beautifully and is well presented, with lovely aromatic spices and a home-cooked meal type of flavour
- there’s a good variety of grilled meats, fish and vegetables and traditional curries
- the naan breads are delicious
- unfortunately the service and the general upkeep of the restaurant do not match the food.
I had the tandoori lamb chops which were beautifully spiced and marinated in pomegranate, one of the best dishes I have had in a while.
Downside: when you feel like whipping out your hoover and give the carpets a good clean, you do wonder how much the owners are looking after the restaurant.
Having said that, for unpretentious and honest Indian food, I would still recommend this place: if you have an account with Opentable you can check their special offers (at the time of booking they had a 50% off the a la carte menu offer).
