A little slice of the French Riviera in Islington

By Paola Bassanese

Did you know that Hexagone is a common appellation for France? With its 6 sides, France’s shape resembles a hexagon and hence the name Hexagone Boutique for a new lifestyle concept store in Islington. The lifestyle concept is based on 6 main pillars: home, beauty, drugstore, stationery, accessories and kids.

The South of France is not just a holiday destination but Europe’s best shopping hotspot: artisans and craftspeople there produce high quality, durable goods that get passed on from generation to generation.

This passion for durable, beautiful and coveted goods transpires in every corner of Hexagone Boutique, representing a number of artisans and ethical stores from every corner of France. The idea is to showcase heritage and ethical products and accessories like the Camargue leather boots or the bags and wallets from Veja.

As you walk down Camden Passage near Angel Station, you are surrounded by vintage and antique shops, gorgeous little cafes and restaurants. Hexagone Boutique brings a slice of Provence with its elegant display. As you enter Hexagone Boutique you are immediately experiencing a little bit of French elegance – and if you speak French it’s an added bonus (don’t worry, it’s not an essential requirement)!

I was completely enamoured with Cire Trudon’s candles – this maison dates from 1643, and La Société Parisienne de Savons with its unique soaps, lip balms and scented talcum powder. There’s so many beautiful gift ideas in the shop, and with Christmas approaching you are spoilt for choice.

When I visited, the Opinel folding pocket knives were selling like hotcakes – these knives have been around since 1890, recognised by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1985 among the best designs worldwide and Picasso famously used his beloved Opinel knife to carve sculptures.

There is so much history behind each piece and is worth spending time in the shop and get a proper “tour” to understand where everything comes from and how it is sourced (as well as which social and environmental projects it supports).
