Review: Absolute Aromas Balance Face Oil

By Paola Bassanese

If you have combination skin and prone to blemishes, the Balance Facial Treatment Oil from Absolute Aromas is a good oil to use. Sometimes it may seem counterintuitive to use oil for oily skin but its composition is similar to our skin’s own natural oils and can therefore help balance over-production of sebum. One of the carrier oils in this facial oil is from coconut: coconuts contain lauric acid which have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. Because coconut is similar to sebum it tricks the skin into not producing too much sebum. Sebum is there to protect our skin from external aggressors like cold or hot weather or from infections.

I have been using the Balance oil for a few days now either as a morning or evening treatment. Because of its ingredients like frankincense and lavender the oil is sleep-inducing at night and as a facial treatment it works well as a bed time routine. I inhale the scent first after warming a few drops of oil into my hands: the breathing combined with the aromatherapy fragrance helps me calm down and get ready for sleep. I then massage the oil until it’s completely absorbed.

As a morning treatment, the oil can be used like a moisturiser and it will keep the skin from looking shiny. I apply it under the foundation; because I use a mineral foundation the oil doubles as a good primer. Again, I massage the oil until it has totally sunken into the skin. In the morning my nose picks up the scent of bergamot, lemon and petitgrain (bitter orange): these citrus scents are uplifting and energising in the morning.

This oil is more than meets the eye: it has many layers of scents and therapeutic properties.
